3 business ideas that won’t cost you a fortune but can give you more than 1,000% return

Not a day goes by without having another story on the rise of online retail at the expense of traditional bricks and mortar stores.  A combination of the strength of the Australian dollar and the ease of on the net shopping, from a business perspective have both been major factors in the continued momentum of online commerce.  Harvey Norman recently announced that like-for-like sales at its retail stores fell 6.3 per cent in the first half. Woolworths is looking to divest its Dick Smith chain and last year saw closures at Colorado, Angus & Robertson and Borders to name a few.

Amongst all these circumstances, online retail is booming.  The trend has led to the creation of the NAB Online Retail Sales Index, which highlights the significant change that the retail sector is undergoing.  NAB reports that in 2011 online sales represented 4.9 per cent of total retail sales; however the growth rate for online sales was 29 per cent per annum, against traditional retail sales growth of just 2.5 per cent per annum. Interestingly this report debunks the myth that the majority of online sales are to international websites, highlighting a tremendous opportunity for Australian businesses.

Are you still thinking about starting your own online business?  Many thousands of people do.  You might have friends or family members who make a living with a home-based Internet business already.  The problem is that not everyone will make money online, because making money on the Internet takes a long time to learn, and most people give up because it can be extremely frustrating.

With over 1,500,000 “Online Business” related searches on the Internet every month, it’s safe to say that there is a lot of demand for information on how to make money on the Internet.  Currently the Internet is busting at the seams with opportunities, and 2012 couldn’t be a better time to start.  Here are 3 online business ideas and opportunities for you to consider before the end of 2012!

Online Business Idea #1 – Internet home-based businesses using e-Commerce.

What is it?  Selling products or a technology-based service on your own website.  Most important skills needed? Web marketing, social networking, sales copywriting.  Best learning resources? FlyingSolo’s Small Business Guides, Entrepreneur.com’s Online Business Startup Guide.

Online Business Idea #2 – Create a startup web business, sell it on online marketplace.

This is a classic money maker – Create a site with good concept, outsource to your partners, market the website, make some profit, and sell it for a higher sum of money.  From the $300 case, you could even get more than $3,000.

Online Business Idea #3 – Sell your own products or services.

If you are able to create your own products at low cost then why not set yourself up an ecommerce website and start selling them online. There are some great sites which offer affordable e-Commerce solutions such as Store2Go.net and ekmpowershop.com that you could use.

Getting a website for your business is straightforward these days.  Gone is the era where you had to navigate through domain name registration, hosting and website building tools.  And cost is no longer a factor as many offerings are free or very low cost. Often it’s as easy as setting up a Facebook page.  BusinessZoom is here in Australia (and New Zealand) to assist small business owner in realising their dreams.  You can build your own website for free.  We also provide tools and place to advertise your business, products or services at no cost.  If you decide to publish your website using a business domain name (such as mybusiness.com.au), you can pay just a fraction of cost to upgrade your plan.  It’s that simple.

Furthermore, for business owners who don’t have time to make their own website, our Hire-A-Pro package is available at a very competitive price.  Check out our great features and some examples of our client’s beautiful websites.

Why do I need a mobile site (Part 2)

This article continues a recent topic about main reasons as to why business needs to consider having mobile site for growing their business.

When browsing a traditional website using a smart phone, there is a lot of untidiness in regular websites, usually created by large banners, jumping ads and promotions that just add to the noise and confusion in a mobile device.  Whilst some people might say that the iPhone provides exceptional user experience, it is far from being optimal.  You can compare the iPhone browsing experience to reading a newspaper in a dark room with a flash light. At any moment you can only see a limited part of the page, usually caused by the need to zoom-in and zoom-out in order to read the text. You wouldn’t agree to read your newspaper like that, so why accept it on your mobile device?

This is one of the main reasons as to why many businesses have understood and for the reason they have built dedicated iPhone websites (e.g. News Mobile Site, CNET Mobile Site, ANZ Mobile Banking Site) that are very different from their regular internet website. In addition business would like to add mobile specific features like mobile ads, location based services that use GPS functionality, click-to-call etc. All these features are not available on the PC website.

Creating a mobile optimized site can be a overwhelming task. You need to think about supporting multiple devices and multiple browsers. Then you get to the topic of maintenance, how do you keep your regular website and your mobile site in sync? And the biggest question is how do you achieve all this without getting into a heavy investment. This is exactly the pain we identified and solved at BusinessZoom.  Using our platform, we are able to build mobile website that are based on your existing website. What that means is that you only have to maintain your regular website. Any changes you make will automatically be propagated into your mobile site. How do we do that? Well that’s the uniqueness of the technology we have developed. The good thing is that you don’t need to care about that. We take care of building, hosting, maintaining and supporting your mobile site. All you need to do is just promote it.  Smart businesses make use of technology to promote their website and grow their business.

BusinessZoom is currently running a special offer for Australia and New Zealand.  You can have a professional mobile site designed, built and hosted for just $199.  This includes web designer services and one year hosting fee.  On the second year, just pay us $9/month.  For a piece of mind, if you find a better quote for similar features, we’d be happy to refund your money.

Why do I need a mobile site (Part 1)

Small business owners often asked us, “why do I need a mobile website?”  Nielsen Online’s surveys in September 2010 indicates that there has been significant growth in Australia mobile Internet usage during the year. The survey shows that 36% of Australia mobile phone owners use their device to access the Internet.  As a comparison, in May 2010, a survey conducted by Pew Internet shows that 38% of US cell phone owners use their device to access the Internet.  What does it mean?  This result is no surprise with new versions of Internet-enabled mobile phones entering the market this year like mushrooms after the rain (iPhone, Blackberry, Android etc). The Internet is now in the grasp of many hands. It is today by far the most personal gadget, accompanying us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week wherever we go. By 2014, mobile Internet users should take over desktop Internet usage.  Businesses understand this and have followed by creating websites that are tailored to the mobile user.

Now, the fact is most websites display quite poorly on mobile devices as they were not built to fit a small screen. A study shows that the average success rate for a user to complete a task via his mobile device was only 59%.  The reason is that websites were not tailored for a mobile on-the-go type of interaction. Mobile users have different needs, they might be standing in the corner of a street trying to get precise information like your businesses address or the price of a product. How long will it take them to get to that information? If the information is not visible and the site is not appealing, chances are that they will just give up and search for a more mobile-friendly website that is willing to provide them with that information and keep them engaged.

So what do you do about it?  Look out for our next post as we will cover the following topics.  Businesses basically have two options:

  • Do nothing and hope that the mobile browsers will improve with time
  • Create an optimised site for mobile

On the next article, we’ll elaborate this topic further.

How to Launch Your Web Site Successfully

Without a proper planning, your web site will remain virtually invisible unless you take the proper steps to draw attention to it.  The good news is, driving qualified prospects to your site is not difficult if you plan properly.  A proper plan for launching your web site will take into account all four stages of a successful launch: preparation, pre-launch, launch and post-launch.

Preparation Stage

This stage includes three important strategies:

Develop your advertising campaign. Create banner ads, text for posting to classified ads and full page text ads. Be sure to follow the rules of good ad development and test market the ads for effectiveness.

Competitive research.  This means gathering information on the competition. Who is ranked highly in the search engines? Visit their web sites, analyze their page structures, utilize what you learn to hone your web pages. CAUTION: Copyright law on the Internet is not always clearly defined. Be sure your research does not extend to “borrowing” your competitors keywords or copy.

Research the publications and media outlets specific to your product or service. Develop a press release. Make sure it is newsworthy. NOTE: Just stating “Web Site XYZ Now In Business” is not usually considered newsworthy. The editors of these publications are looking for items of interest to their readers. Give details, explain the who, what, when, where and why of your product or service.

Pre-Launch Stage

It is normal to begin the pre-launch stage about 45 days prior to the launch of your website.  The pre-launch stage should contain:

Submit your optimized web site to the search engines and directories.   For example, your local business directory available in BusinessZoom.  This is essential because 80% of the searches performed on the web, so focus your attention here.

Develop strategic alliances with the businesses you identified as complimentary in the previous phase. These alliances should include cross-promotion of products and services, reciprocal linking, and editorial recommendation, if appropriate.

Submit your press release to the media.  Remember, the goal here is to develop a relationship with the media. Make certain you press release is newsworthy and do not harass the editors in attempt to get them to publish your information. Done properly, this is an efficient, low cost way to get a large amount of attention for your web site.  Some examples of free press release websites include www.newsmaker.com.au and www.freepressrelease.com.au

Launch Stage

The third phase of the plan is the web site launch. Essential elements of a successful launch include:

Strategic advertising.  Arrange to run banner ads on major portal sites. If possible, pay by the click through, not by the impression. Submit ads to several high traffic classified ad sites. Run ads in ezines on subjects related to or complimentary to the specifics of your product or service. Develop a method of identifying which ads are drawing traffic. This information will be invaluable in the post-launch phase. Make sure all advertising and tracking is in place by the launch date.

Begin your direct mail campaign.  Only use true opt-in email lists! Spamming is the most certain way I know to lose your email account, web site, ISP and your reputation, both personal and professional. The best way to have a true opt-in email list is to gather it yourself by asking visitors to your web site to join your mailing list. Maintain records of all subscriptions. Always make it at least as easy to unsubscribe from your list as it was to subscribe.  An example of free mail campaign website is www.mailchimp.com.

Post-Launch Stage

A few weeks after the launch of your web site, it is time to do an evaluation. Having tracked the statistics both prior to and after the launch, you should be able to see improved traffic and increased sales. Now is the time to take stock of what is working and what is not, what needs fine tuning and what should be left alone. After the evaluation, it is time to begin the cycle again.

BusinessZoom can assist you in promoting your website by using our free business directory.  This is  a great way to launch your website as the directory is real time and regularly indexed by major search engines such as Google and Bing.

How to Successfully Launch a New Product or Service

According to recent market research, 40% of new products or services that enter the market fail. This is a daunting number for any business to consider.  Obviously you don’t have to be part of the statistics.  The three major reasons most products and services fail:

  • Product or service is not adequately in alignment with existing brand values
  • Failure to understand the market
  • Lack of sufficient investment into distribution and market exposure

The most critical and complex of these is the failure to understand the market. Entrepreneurs and corporate executives can fall prey to trusting their experience and instinct alone. Often previous success can be our greatest enemy in future product launch attempts, because over-confidence can lead to personal judgment decisions rather than audience validation and statistical analysis. For successful product launch, you should consider the following:

Understand the needs of the target audience

When you spend the time and money to go out and ask the market, it is imperative to frame the questioning in terms of the audience needs. Often businesses frame survey content in terms of preference alone. This skews the results. For example, if I was asked whether I prefer Coke or Pepsi, I’d probably say Coke, but the truth of the matter is that I don’t drink soda very often. In this example, it really doesn’t matter much which brand I prefer if I am not an actual consumer of the product. I have no need for another soda option.

Ask the market

This refers to surveys, focus groups, interviews and any form of user testing. Technology has made these processes much faster, economical and efficient than just a few short years ago. Small businesses and large businesses alike can facilitate large-scale studies quickly and get responses back in days.

Gain sufficient competitive knowledge

Many a race has been lost to those who underestimated their competition. When bringing a new product or service to market, it is vital to be aware of both direct and indirect competition in the market. Referring back to the example above: if a company wanted to launch a new cola, their direct competition would be existing colas, their indirect competition could be other sodas (such as Sprite, ginger ale, rootbeer), or to take it even further, water. When evaluating competition it is important to consider price, availability, unique strengths, and any other distinguishing factor. The higher the distinguishing traits rate on the target audience needs assessment, the more critical it is to consider.

Understand current trending

Trending considers general shifts in the purchasing choices of the target audience. Again, using the cola example, years ago bottled water was very uncommon in beverage purchases and would not have been part of a competitive matrix. Over the past decade however, the popularity of bottled water has increased dramatically, and this trend has greatly impacted the soda market. Current trending is often difficult to track. It is difficult to determine if trends will continue to grow, or if they are simply a short-lived anomaly. Savvy marketers both listen to trends and impact them.

Learn from the past

If 72 percent of all new products fail, there is a lot of great information available to help make wise decisions about your new product. If something similar has been attempted before, why did it fail? By asking questions based on the concepts included here, you might be able to determine what was the missing ingredient for success, or perhaps avoid repeating history.

The summary of these critical factors takes place before extensive product development. Proper effort spent in research and brand analysis can give companies the assets they need for successful launch of a new product or service. Companies that follow these rules can keep themselves in the percent that succeed.

As a small business owner, you can utilise free services from BusinessZoom and promote your business at no cost.  For example:

One third of Australians accessed the Internet via their mobile phone

A very interesting survey conducted by Nielsen Online during the month of September 2010 indicates that there has been significant growth in Australia mobile Internet usage during the year. The survey shows that 36% of Australia mobile phone owners use their device to access the Internet.  As a comparison, in May 2010, a survey conducted by Pew Internet shows that 38% of US cell phone owners use their device to access the Internet.

The increase in device ownership is bringing about changes in how Australians access the Internet -more than one third of Australians (36%) accessed the Internet via their mobile phone in the past 30 days and 13 percent accessed the Internet via a handheld media device other than a mobile. In the coming 12 months, more than half of online Australians (51%) were likely to access the Internet via their mobile phone and as many as 30 percent indicated they may access the Internet via a handheld device other than a mobile.

Australians’ use of mobile phones to access mobile news sites has reached record levels in the wake of the country’s closest ever election result, according to the latest mobile traffic figures released by The Nielsen Company.   The report measures mobile website traffic, saw overall volume jump by 19 percent in August, with the major news publishers the key beneficiaries of the increase in traffic.

Amongst the major news sites, Nine News saw the largest increase in mobile traffic in August, up 27 percent from July 2010. Fairfax Digital’s SMH and The Age mobile sites were up 21 percent and 18 percent respectively, while News Digital Media’s news.com.au increases 18 percent.  Refer to chart below.

Tips to Get Started with Your Online Advertising

Getting your business listed with the online directories and search engines is important.  Why? Because this is how today’s consumers search the Internet to find local businesses like yours.

There was a time when all you had to do was get an ad in the Yellow Pages, hand out some flyers, and your local marketing was good to go.  Well, not anymore.  These days, you also need to promote your business on the Internet.

This article shows some key tips to start with.

Get started by making sure your business is listed with the following:

  • Major Search Engines: Google, Yahoo, and Bing local search.  Each lets you submit your business information so that you show up in their local search results. And you’ll also show up in online maps (Google Maps, for example).
  • Online Yellow Pages: This is the online version of the old trusty Yellow Pages.  These online directories generate millions of visitors every day looking for local businesses.
  • Local Directories. There are a number of local directories that focus on helping businesses get more exposure on the Internet.  You can search for “local directories” on your favorite search engines.  BusinessZoom is one of the great ways that you can use to get your business more exposure on the Internet. As a further step, you can focus on generating search results using user reviews of local services and products.  Check out our previous blog on “Why Customer Testimonials are Important to Your Business Website?

When you submit your business details, don’t forget to include the same descriptive keywords that you use on your website. For example, what you do and where you do it, such as “Hair dressers, Melbourne”. This will improve the chances of your business showing up in the right search results and sending qualified prospects to your website.

Start promoting your business online and get more sales!
