A very interesting survey conducted by Nielsen Online during the month of September 2010 indicates that there has been significant growth in Australia mobile Internet usage during the year. The survey shows that 36% of Australia mobile phone owners use their device to access the Internet. As a comparison, in May 2010, a survey conducted by Pew Internet shows that 38% of US cell phone owners use their device to access the Internet.
The increase in device ownership is bringing about changes in how Australians access the Internet -more than one third of Australians (36%) accessed the Internet via their mobile phone in the past 30 days and 13 percent accessed the Internet via a handheld media device other than a mobile. In the coming 12 months, more than half of online Australians (51%) were likely to access the Internet via their mobile phone and as many as 30 percent indicated they may access the Internet via a handheld device other than a mobile.
Australians’ use of mobile phones to access mobile news sites has reached record levels in the wake of the country’s closest ever election result, according to the latest mobile traffic figures released by The Nielsen Company. The report measures mobile website traffic, saw overall volume jump by 19 percent in August, with the major news publishers the key beneficiaries of the increase in traffic.
Amongst the major news sites, Nine News saw the largest increase in mobile traffic in August, up 27 percent from July 2010. Fairfax Digital’s SMH and The Age mobile sites were up 21 percent and 18 percent respectively, while News Digital Media’s news.com.au increases 18 percent. Refer to chart below.

Hi BusinessZoom, Are there any stats on smartphone ownership in Australia? I would like to know how many people use these things.
Thankyou very much.

Hi Robbie, the report also shows that 24 percent of Australian Internet users were considering purchasing a tablet computer in the next 12 months, while 22 percent thought they might purchase a handheld multi-media device other than a mobile phone (eg iPod Touch, PSP) and 28 percent were considering purchasing a Smartphone. Hope this helps.
